A Bright Sunshiny Day

Hurricane Isaac is dumping a TON of rain on us this weekend, but it's not going to stop us from having a good time!
Miss SP is on her way up from Dallas to see me, meet Mac and snuggle with Mally.

Hope your weekend is full of sunshine and great friends too!

Baby Bits

Aren't babies just the most amazing and perfect creatures?

Everything about them is perfection.

From the sweet smell of a baby's head...

To the most amazing soft skin.

Don't forget the little chubby fat rolls!

And the brand new swirly belly button.

That button nose and those delicious fingers.

And the most perfect tiny toes!

I'm obsessed with these toes.

What's your favorite baby bit?

Baby Mac - 3 Months

*Yes, this post is a few weeks late...

Dear Baby Mac,

Well, it happened again.  I blinked and you are another month older.  THREE MONTHS!  Goodness gracious, how did that happen?  I'm probably going to say this every single month for the rest of your life, but this month was my favorite month so far.  Wow, you have changed and grown so much from that tiny helpless little newborn.  You are seriously the coolest baby I know…and I don’t just say that to all the babies.

This month your personality is really starting to show through.  You are a very happy kid and you absolutely love the sound of your own voice.  You talk, squeal and babble more than any kid I’ve ever met.  You love having conversations with me and every time you hear my voice you start jabbering away.  Sometimes we hang out on the changing table forever just looking at each other and talking a mile a minute.  I sing songs to you and we play peek-a-boo.

You also love standing!  Daddy has been holding you up in his lap and you stand like a champ.  We’ve been watching the Olympics and we think you could win a gold medal in the baby standing event.  You have great head control and wonderful balance.  And speaking of watching the Olympics, you are definitely watching what’s going on around you, including the games.  You can see across the room now and you love looking out windows or at the colors on the TV.  You were completely mesmerized by the ribbons in the rhythmic gymnastics.

You’ve recently discovered your hands and you must have them in your mouth at all times right now.  I’m not sure if you’re teething or if you just think they’re delicious, but you love them.  You also love chewing on Sophie the Giraffe, burp cloths and my fingers.  It’s so amazing to watch you work on getting the toy in your hand to your mouth where you want it.  It takes time and concentration, but you are so smart and determined.  It’s just incredible to watch you learn right before my eyes.

You’re also starting to have strong feelings about things.  You have decided that you hate taking baths longer than 4 minutes.  You scream bloody murder when you’re hungry and we can’t get a bottle ready fast enough for you.  You also insist on holding the bottle yourself.  Your little hands are so active.  You like going on car rides, but you hate it when the car stops at lights or in traffic.  You can only sleep on your back if you’re swaddled, otherwise you love to sleep in your swing or in my arms.  You want to be upright all the time and do not want to be held on your side or snuggled like a baby (unless you’re eating).  You are so curious, you need to be looking around all the time.

Your daddy and I are just having the best time in the world raising you.  We love being your parents.  These three months of maternity leave have been absolutely incredible.  I’ve loved every second I spent with you.  I’m nervous about going back to work, but I also know it’s the right move for our family and you’ll be in good hands.  In the meantime, I’m snuggling with you as much as I possibly can.  I know you won’t be this tiny ever again and I’m trying to soak up every second.  I’m a little sad to see you growing so fast, but then again, I can’t wait to see how you change in the next few weeks!  Every day just keeps getting better.

The Thing about Superheroes

Superheroes don’t always wear capes.

Sometimes they are disguised as ordinary everyday individuals.

Sometimes they don’t get super-human powers…

They get super kids.

And being a superhero to a little boy is way better than any cape.

This superhero may not be as fast as a speeding bullet…

But he’ll be there in a flash whenever he’s needed.

He may not be as strong as a locomotive…

But he’ll provide a lifetime of strength and support.

And he may not have a super name…

We just call him Daddy.

Waiting for Baby Mac - Pregnancy Book

It's no secret that I absolutely LOVED being pregnant with Mac.  Maybe it was because it took us so long to get there or maybe pregnancy just suited me.  Either way, I loved nearly everything about it.  So, I wanted to do something special to document my pregnancy.  I love the weekly bump shots, but I also wanted to incorporate what we were doing each week of my pregnancy, document how we were feeling and capture all the milestones and little things that we might forget.  I got the idea to do a maternity photo book from this site.  Her book is absolutely amazing and the photos are incredible.  Mine's not quite so spectacular, but I'm pretty proud of it, nonetheless.  It's a week by week account of our lives in the 40 weeks leading up to Mac's birth; from the moment we found out we were expecting to the time he entered the world screaming.  I used Blurb to print it and now I have a beautiful hard-bound coffee table book to remind us of just how excited we were for this baby.  It's so special to me and I hope one day he'll enjoy looking through it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Five on Friday

1.  Well, it's official.  Maternity leave is over and I'm back to work this week.  It's been a rough week too.  Probably not as bad as I had built it up in my head, but going back to the office full-time is definitely one of the hardest decisions I've had to make as a parent so far.  But I really do think it's the right one.  We found a great nanny that Ryan and I (and Mac) love.  I feel very good and confident about leaving Mac with her all day.  I know she's going to take good care of him, spoil him, give him lots of love and attention (as well as take care of the dogs and help out around the house), but it's just so hard knowing that I'm not there and missing out on all the fun they're having.  I spent the entire week leading up to my return sobbing and having panic attacks about how horrible it was going to be.  Turns out, it's hard, but I think we'll manage.  I've cried every morning this week when I leave the house, but once I'm at work I'm fine.  And actually, I feel more like myself now than I have in months.  And that's a good thing.  I keep hearing it gets a little easier every day.  That's good to know.  So, I figure that by the time Mac turns 15, I should be fine and completely back to normal.

2.  Speaking of my old self, when do I get her body back?  And should I be horribly embarrassed that I'm wearing maternity slacks to work today?  Three months postpartum.  Because I'm not...I may never wear normal slacks again.  Maternity pants are so damn comfortable!

3.  My Facebook feed is flooded with photos of my friends' kids going to school or back to school this week.  I can't believe so many of my friends have school-aged children.  I was just home a few days ago and my cousin Mandy's oldest is starting seventh grade!  SEVENTH GRADE!  How did that happen?  These kids were just babies like yesterday.  Which makes me freak the hell out because Mac's going to grow up and will be going to school a few years from now.  Which will basically feel like tomorrow.  With a backpack and new shoes and spiral notebooks.  Ahh!  WHERE DID THE TIME GO?!!

4.  My goddaughter's first anniversary of her baptism is coming up next weekend.  I want to get her something special to commemorate the occasion.  Ideally, I'd love to get her something (or do something) that can be done every year, like a tradition.  I thought about doing a donation in her name or a savings bond (do people still do those?) or something, but nothing's really striking my fancy.  Anyone have any ideas?

5.  I am SO incredibly far behind on reading blogs and I really miss them.  I'm dying to know what's going on in everyone's life, but I haven't been able to keep up.  My Google Reader is out of control!  It says 1000+ but I know it really means 7000+.  Oy.  I've been reading some blogs on my iPad, but it doesn't let me comment (why is that?), so if I haven't commented on your blog in a while that's why.  And I'm sorry!  I'll do better.  And someday I'll catch up on everyone's lives.  Maybe.

Time's Up

Hey guys, Baby Mac here.

Just stopping in to say howdy.

Mama goes back to work tomorrow and she's having a rough time with it.

She won't stop kissing me and snuggling with me and crying...
It's so embarrassing.

I keep telling her I'll be just fine and she's really not missing much.

I'm just going to spend my days hanging out in my chicken jammies and chewing on my fingers.

Maybe do some pooping and spitting up every now and then.

So boring.

Plus, Mally and Sage and Jigs promise to keep an eye on me.

Although that cat's a little shady...not sure if I trust her.

I'll be just fine mama.

Promise.
